Teaching Background

David Moody was recently a Visiting Assistant Professor at the State University of New York at Oswego where he advised students, taught several face-to-face and online courses, and served as a faculty advisor for several student organizations. His past responsibilities as an educator have included supervision and mentorship to student interns and volunteers for various academic programming events and student-run organizations.

Additionally, Dr. Moody has developed and coordinated several academic initiatives such as Voices of Diversity (a program designed to promote awareness to the lack of representation and misrepresentation of minorities in the media industry) and the Dr. Lewis B. O’Donnell Media Summit which is a day-long event that gives students an opportunity to network with some of the top names in the broadcasting industry.

He received his Ph.D. in American Culture Studies from Bowling Green State University and is the author of two books: The Complexity and Progression of Black Representation in Film and Television (2016) and Political Melodies in the Pews: The Voice of the Black Christian Rapper in the Twenty-first-Century Church (2012) published by Lexington Books (a subsidiary of Rowman and Littlefield).

Of joining Lake Erie College, Dr. Moody states that “I am looking forward to working with the Lake Erie College staff and faculty in an effort to promote a culture that facilitates mentoring relationships and encourages opportunities for student exploration inside and outside the classroom.”

Additional Background

Dave Moody has worked professionally in broadcasting, theater, and film for over forty years. Dr. Moody started his professional broadcast career at WREO AM & FM in Ashtabula (summers of 1977-1978); WUBE-FM Cincinnati (1979-1980); WKSW FM Cleveland (1981-1982); WERE 1300AM Cleveland (1983-1986); and WOIO TV & WUAB TV in Cleveland (1986-1999). Additionally, he was the President/Owner of DM Communications, Inc. (a media buying/consulting agency) from 1999-2010. His career in broadcasting (which included working in management in radio and television) started in 1976. In 1990, he became the second Black American to be hired as a local sales manager for a television station in the Cleveland (Ohio) market which at the time was ranked (DMA-Designated Market Area) # 14 in the country. His primary responsibilities as a manager included managing a local sales department with annual sales of $10 million. In addition, he was responsible for recruiting, coaching, and mentoring the sales team; creating agendas for weekly meetings; and preparing monthly and annual budgets. He also supervised a sales staff that consisted of nine full-time salespeople, one part-time salesperson, and a local sales assistant. Dr. Moody continued to work in television sales management until 1999. During his tenure in the broadcasting industry, he managed/sold over 70 million dollars. His acting stage credits include: Detective Baylen in Glengarry Glen Ross (Blank Canvas Theatre); Turkle in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (Blank Canvas Theatre); Horse in The Full Monty (Weathervane Community Playhouse); Warren in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (Chagrin Valley Little Theatre); Far Away (The Cleveland Play House); actor/stage reading for Private Places (The Cleveland Play House); Carmen and The Elixir of Love (Cleveland Opera); TJ in Trees of Hope (Geauga Lyric Theatre); Roger in Streamers (University of Cincinnati); and Clay in Dutchman (University of Cincinnati). Film credits include Cherry (directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo); White Boy Rick (directed by Yann Demange); With This Ring ( directed by Nzingha Stewart); Criminal Activities (directed by Jackie Earle Haley); Draft Day ( directed by Ivan Reitman), Big Foot (Bob Gray Productions), Annie’s Way (Brigid Krane/Director) and Building Dreams (Bowling Green State University). Television and radio credits include: AT&T, Cleveland Indians and Major League Baseball Productions, Voice-over talent for Raymond C. Pierce (2001 mayoral candidate for the city of Cleveland), Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., Kinetico, 2003 McDonald’s/ESPN All American Power Ade Jam Fest, Marathon Oil Co, and Remington Productions. Dr. Moody is the author of two books: The Complexity and Progression of Black Representation in Film and Television (2016) and Political Melodies in the Pews ?: The Voice of the Black Christian Rapper in the Twenty-first-Century Church (2012) published by Lexington Books (a subsidiary of Rowman and Littlefield). Dr. Moody is an Assistant Professor of Communication at Lake Erie College. He received his B.F.A in Broadcasting from the University of Cincinnati; M.A. in Radio/Television from Ohio University; PhD in America Culture Studies from Bowling Green State University. Dr. Moody also serves as the Board Chair for the Popular Culture Association (PCA).
